How film is developed:
To start developing the film you must have the following equipment; parts of the tank, cassette opener, reel a pair of scissors and used film.
To prepare (place steps in order):

-Once the tail of the film is on the reel wind up the film using the reel, once all the film is on the reel, cut off the plastic part at the end which is known as a spool.
-Then put the loaded reel on the center support and into the tank, double check to make sure that the lid is closed so the light doesn't touch the film! You can now turn on the lights.
- Using the cassette opener to open up the film and then place it on the reel (be careful not to touch the film!).
- Once this has been placed in order, either using a black bag in which you will be placing everything, or in a darkroom take out the film (once the lights are turned off).

Developing into negatives:
First set up all the chemicals you will need: Film developer (mix: 3 part water to 1 part developer), stop bath (mix: 40 parts water to 1 part stop bath) and Fixer (mix: 4 part water to 1 part fixer)
Place the film developer (this turns the film into a negative film) into the tank and place the lid on and gently rock the tank around for about 5 seconds, do this every 30 seconds. After 1 minute take the lid off and pour out the developer.
Next place the stop bath (which is to stop the developer from working anymore) into the tank and place the cap on and gently rock the tank around for around 5 minutes then take the lid off and pour it out.
Then pour the fixer (which works to make the negative image permanent) into the tank and place the cap on and agitate it for 5 seconds for 20 seconds. Then take the cap off and pour out the fixer (some fixers can be reused though).
Lastly to wash the tank, place it under running water for fifteen minutes, then tip out the water.
Take the lid off the developing tank and pull out the reel, then pull the film away from the reel touching the sides of the film, DO NOT TOUCH THE FILM ANY BUT ON THE EDGE. Hang the film in a clean area and when the film is dry, divide the film up into 5 to 6 negatives and place them in a plastic file.
Turning the negative into a black and white film (fill in the blanks):
To turn a ________ to black and white film, you will need these pieces of equipment in the darkroom: photographic ___________, three processing trays, baseboard, filtered safe light, tongs, scissors, timer, focus _________, paper developer, stop bath, paper fixer, running water, photographic paper and filters
Firstly set up the darkroom , placing in each separate tray; ______________, stop bath and paper fixer.
After selecting a clean, dust free negative from your previous film, get the negative carrier out of the enlarger and gently place the negative into the holder shiny side up, upside down (you can tell this through the negative numbers leaning against the back of the enlarger). Turn the filtered safe light ____ and the white room light off.
Switch the enlarger on and change the __________ to the size you want.
With the aperture (gap where the light comes through) fully open, change the focus until you have defined picture that you want. Then turn the ______from full to f.8 to make the edges sharper and expose this for about __________.
Word Bank: -negative
-enlarger
-magnifier
-paper developer
-on
-image
-aperture
- ten seconds.
Making the test strip:
Next you have to print a test strip in order to know how long you want to let the light through the negative and onto the photographic paper.
- Cover the white light of the enlarger with a red safe light filter
- Cut a middle sized piece of photographic paper from your packet
- Place this paper known as a test shiny side up, on the baseboard underneath the enlarger
- Then expose the whole paper to the white light for 2 seconds, cover a quarter for 2 seconds (with a thick card), then cover half for 2 seconds and finally three quarters for 2 seconds.
Once this is down place the test strip into the developing tray for about a minute, then lift the test out with a pair pf tongs and let leftovers of the developer run off for 10 seconds
Then place the test strip in the stop bath and leave it there for about 15 seconds and then using another pair of tongs, lift the strip and drain for 10 seconds
Then place the test strip into the tray of fixer for about two minutes
Rinse the test strip under water and look at it under a bright light and choose how dark you would like your photograph (lightest being 2 seconds and darkest eight seconds)
Making the black and white print (fill in the words):
After you choose how dark you would like your photograph, turn the lights off again after the safety lights are on and pull out a slip of photographic paper _______ the enlarger, exposing it for whatever amount of time that you chose on your test print. Then repeat the same steps as before with the ________, stop bath and fixer.
Wash the print for about 10 minutes under water about 20 degrees Celsius. After the ______, drain the print and hang it on clips to dry.
Lastly, look at your print in normal light.
____________, you now know how to develop film into a negative and then into a black and white film!
